Zanele Muholi's Second Volume 'Somnyama Ngonyama' Explores Blackness and Selfhood

On June 11, 2024, Zanele Muholi released the second edition of 'Somnyama Ngonyama, Hail the Dark Lioness.' This hardback volume spans 172 pages and showcases 80 photographs that delve into themes of Black identity, resistance, and imagined futures, featuring images captured globally since the first volume's debut in 2018. Curated by Renée Mussai, it also includes essays from more than ten contributors, including Sophia Al-Maria and Natasha Becker. Born in Umlazi, Durban, in 1972, Muholi is a renowned visual activist and photographer, co-founding the Forum for the Empowerment of Women and establishing Inkanyiso. Their honors comprise the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres from France (2017) and the Kraszna-Krausz Photography Book Award (2019).
