Zanele Muholi Monograph 'Somnyama Ngonyama' Published by 24 ORE Cultura

24 ORE Cultura has released a highly anticipated monograph on Zanele Muholi, the South African photographer and visual activist born in 1972. The volume, titled 'Zanele Muholi. Somnyama Ngonyama – Ave, Leonessa nera', features around ninety black-and-white self-portraits that gained prominence at the 2019 Venice Biennale, where Muholi's large-scale works were a hypnotic presence in the Arsenale's Corderie. The book traces Muholi's personal and global narrative as a direct witness to apartheid, using visual and political activism to confront racism and discrimination. In an interview, Muholi stated, 'At the root of intolerance, racism, and violence is ignorance, which can only be limited through education.' The monograph includes contributions from writers and poets such as Ama Josephine Budge, Fariba Derakhshani, Ruti Talmor, and Deborah Willis, culminating in a dialogue between Muholi and curator Renée Mussai titled 'Archive of the Self', which interrogates the concept of archive within urgent contemporary debates. The 212-page book, priced at €79.90, is edited by Muholi and published in Milan.
