Zaha Hadid's Mathematics Gallery Opens at London Science Museum

architecture-design · 2026-05-05

The Science Museum in London has inaugurated Mathematics: The Winton Gallery, the first permanent museum installation designed by Zaha Hadid in the UK since her death on March 31, 2016. Located on the second floor of the museum on Exhibition Road, the gallery explores mathematics' role in shaping the contemporary world. It is the only permanent museum exhibition designed by Hadid in her over thirty-year career. The design features over 100 pieces from the collection, with curved surfaces and seating that mimic airflow generated by the flight of the Handley Page aircraft, whose prototype hangs at the gallery's center. Hadid, who had a personal connection to mathematics, stated in a 2015 CNN interview that math was part of her daily life in Iraq, instilled by her parents' passion for discovery without distinguishing between science and creativity. The opening coincides with the Serpentine Gallery's exhibition Zaha Hadid: Early Paintings and Drawings, honoring the late architect.
