Zaha Hadid Architects to Design Singapore Science Center by 2027

architecture-design · 2026-04-27

Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA), in collaboration with local partner Architects 61 Pte and environmental consultant Atelier Ten, is designing a new Science Center in Singapore's Jurong Lake district, scheduled for completion by 2027. The 52,400-square-meter complex, commissioned by the Singapore Science Center Board (founded in 1977), comprises five interlocking rectangular volumes with large glazed openings called 'monocles' that frame views of the lake. The design features bridge-like portions allowing the building to 'float above the surrounding park,' with courtyards and gardens creating a fluid connection to the nearby MRT station. Aligned with the Singapore Green Plan 2030, the project targets BCA Green Mark Platinum Super Low Energy certification through photovoltaic panels, green roofs with native vegetation, and sustainable construction practices. The facility will house exhibition galleries, interactive labs, event spaces, administrative offices, archives, a Digital Fabrication Lab, a Makerspace, a vertical farming system, and a next-generation observatory. CEO Professor Lim Tit Meng stated the aim is to create a universally accessible destination for all ages and abilities. Carlo Ratti, in his recent book 'Urbanità' (Einaudi), describes Singapore as a leading global laboratory for urban innovation, noting the city-state's early adoption of alternative mobility and green residential integration.
