Zachary Cahill's USSA Project Explores Soviet-Inspired Utopian Visions Through Multimedia Installations
Zachary Cahill's immersive installation USSA 2012: The People's Palace's Gift Shop debuted at the Chicago Cultural Center in summer 2012, presenting a souvenir store that engaged with political art and propaganda aesthetics. The Chicago-based multimedia artist has developed the USSA project over nearly a decade, interpreting the acronym as United Soviet States of America through exhibitions featuring various narrative chapters. These include an orphanage, giftshop, wellness center, and planned assembly, alongside flags, hymns, and pageantry referencing Soviet utopian experiments. Cahill's USSA Wellness Center marked a significant shift toward neo-expressionist painting, moving beyond institutional critique to embrace painting as occupational therapy. His work demonstrates a postironic belief in art's healing power, particularly noted in the context of contemporary political landscapes. Recently, Cahill's art has been displayed at Iceberg Projects in Chicago and Illinois Wesleyan University Gallery. He was appointed curator at the University of Chicago's Gray Center for Arts and Inquiry, with his exhibition USSA Love Chapel opening at Regina Rex on 21 May 2017. The artist's practice spans roles as critic, curator, teacher, and writer, emphasizing gesamtkunstwerk principles. This coverage originates from the January & February 2017 issue of ArtReview, produced in association with K11 Art Foundation.
