Zac Langdon-Pole Wins BMW Art Journey for Bird Migration Project

award · 2026-04-24

Zac Langdon-Pole has been selected by Art Basel and BMW for the next BMW Art Journey, chosen from a shortlist of three artists at the Discoveries sector of Art Basel Hong Kong. His project, Sutures of the Sky, traces bird migratory routes used by Polynesian pathfinders, following the flight paths of white storks and arctic terns across Central Europe, Southern Africa, Samoa, and Hawaii. The journey aims to explore intersections between culture, celestial mapping, and existential questions. Langdon-Pole, New Zealand-born and Berlin-based, is represented by Michael Lett in Auckland. The jury, which included Richard Armstrong (director, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and Foundation), Claire Hsu (director, Asia Art Archive), Bose Krishnamachari (president, Kochi-Muziris Biennale), Matthias Mühling (director, Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus und Kunstbau), and Pauline J. Yao (curator, Visual Art M+), unanimously selected him. The jury praised the project for reviving a sense of wonder and ideological reflection, noting Langdon-Pole's plans to collaborate with experts across disciplines.
