Yves Bélorgey's Modernist Architecture Paintings at Sérignan
The Musée régional d'art contemporain Languedoc-Roussillon in Sérignan presents a major exhibition of Yves Bélorgey's work from March 11 to June 10, 2012. Bélorgey's paintings and drawings depict modernist housing blocks built mainly in the 1960s-70s, always without human figures. Since the early 1990s, he has based his practice on photographic documentation gathered during travels in France and worldwide, producing oil on canvas and graphite on paper works, often 240 x 240 cm. His art balances an inquiry into painting's historical status with an anthropological claim, rejecting formalism and citational detachment. The Sérignan show is one of the largest to date, featuring about twenty paintings and over forty drawings, including the notable Ulm series. The installation highlights architecture as a constructed scene, emphasizing the viewer's and artist's bodily presence. A monographic publication covering Bélorgey's entire oeuvre will be released, and an exhibition opens October 15 at Mamco in Geneva.
