Yuval Avital's 360-bell sound sculpture in Calabria seeks donations

artist · 2026-05-04

In San Floro, Calabria, the agricultural startup Mulinum and Michelangelo Pistoletto's Terzo Paradiso project are collaborating on a large-scale sound sculpture by artist Yuval Avital. Titled "Il giardino dei sonagli: le spighe sonore del Mediterraneo" (The Garden of Rattles: The Sounding Ears of the Mediterranean), the work consists of 360 bells and rattles from across the Mediterranean, hung on flexible metal wheat stalks in a cornfield. The sculpture is both kinetic and sound art, activated by wind and visitors. It will be inaugurated on July 14, 2019, during the Festa della trebbiatura (Threshing Festival). Avital describes it as "a sound equation of the achievable utopia of the Mediterranean," celebrating human diversity. The project is inclusive: a Call for Bells invites donations of bells or rattles from Mediterranean countries until May 31, 2019. Mulinum, founded by young entrepreneur Stefano Caccavari, revived ancient grain supply chains through crowdfunding. Simona Mazzitelli, Terzo Paradiso ambassador and project creator, notes that Pistoletto and Saverio Teruzzi recognized Mulinum as a center for cultural and territorial development. The sculpture aims to embody the intersection of art, science, and social ethics.
