Yusaku Maezawa acquires record Basquiat; Warhol Museum buys rare Paint by Numbers

market-auction · 2026-05-05

Japanese collector Yusaku Maezawa announced on Instagram that he is the buyer of the record-breaking Jean-Michel Basquiat painting, which is coming to Japan. The Warhol Museum, directed by Eric Shiner, has acquired one of Andy Warhol's rare Paint by Numbers works, which was at the top of Shiner's wish list alongside a Marilyn and an old comic book painting. The Guardian revealed that Yves Klein worked illegally for a year in a frame shop on Old Brompton Road in London, where he learned to use pure pigments and gold leaf. In Moscow, the metro celebrates its 81st anniversary with performances of Pietro Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana by soloists from the Bolshoi and the Royal Danish Opera.
