Yung Ma Appointed Artistic Director for Seoul Mediacity Biennale 2020

festival-fair · 2026-04-20

Yung Ma has been named artistic director for the 2020 Seoul Mediacity Biennale by the Seoul Museum of Art (SeMA). Currently a curator at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, Ma recently organized Cao Fei's solo exhibition HX in 2019. From 2011 to 2016, he served as associate curator of moving image at Hong Kong's M+, where he developed the museum's moving image collection. Ma also co-curated the Hong Kong Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2009 and 2013. The biennale, launched in 2000 to explore art, media, and urban contexts, marks its 20th anniversary in 2020. SeMA director Beck Jee-sook expressed hope that this edition would open a new chapter, synchronizing with global cities and transcending borders and time. Ma plans to focus on moving image forms and implement a multi-site, overlapping structure to connect the event with Seoul's urban fabric. He described the opportunity as an honor, aiming to examine the media landscape with a global perspective. Further details will be announced in coming months.
