Yunchul Kim's Pataphysical Installations for Korean Pavilion at 59th Venice Biennale
From 23 April to 27 November 2022, Yunchul Kim will showcase his interconnected 'pataphysical' installations at the Korean Pavilion during the 59th Venice Biennale. Collaborating with Studio Locus Solus, his artwork incorporates invisible muon particles and draws inspiration from Raymond Roussel's novel Locus Solus as well as Karen Barad's theories. The exhibition envisions a complex pavilion that symbolizes a decentralized world. Kim's drawings, some created over ten years ago, evoke dreams of labyrinths. He advocates for a flat ontology where all entities coexist on equal footing. Notably, he appreciates the Biennale's distinctive national pavilion format for fostering cultural collaboration, particularly with Croatian and Icelandic pavilions. Established in 1995, the Korean Pavilion has significantly enhanced the global visibility of Korean artists, influenced by Hakkyung Cha and traditional Korean beliefs.
