Yuko Mohri's 'Entrelazamientos' Exhibition at Centro Botín Showcases Interactive Installations

exhibition · 2026-03-27

Japanese artist Yuko Mohri is presenting her first exhibition in Spain, titled 'Entrelazamientos,' at the Centro Botín in Santander from March 28 to September 6, 2026. This comprehensive show, her largest in Europe to date, features works spanning from 2000 to the present, including pieces previously shown at Milan's Pirelli HangarBicocca. Mohri, born in 1980 in Kanagawa and based in Tokyo, creates kinetic installations using natural elements and everyday objects that engage viewers through light, sound, scent, and movement. Her practice emphasizes interconnected systems and ephemeral assemblages that address contemporary social and environmental themes, particularly interdependence and repair. Key works include 'Moré Moré (Leaky)' and 'Decomposition,' both featured in her 2024 Venice Biennale presentation for Japan, where sensory elements transformed the national pavilion's architecture. Other notable installations are 'Flutter' (2018-2025), an aquarium-based piece with light sensors influenced by John Cage and Nam June Paik; 'Piano Solo: Belle-Île,' a modified piano that translates environmental sounds into music, created during the pandemic; and 'You Locked Me Up in a Grave, You Owe Me at Least the Peace of a Grave' (2018), an immersive work with a rotating spiral staircase. The exhibition also includes 'I/O' (2011-ongoing), an early work where suspended paper rolls collect dust that activates electrical signals. Mohri's artistic influences include Marcel Duchamp and Alexander Calder, and her site-specific installations respond to imperceptible conditions like gravity, humidity, and magnetism, creating small-scale organic ecosystems. The exhibition highlights evolving interactions between objects, sounds, people, and the natural and artificial, reflecting philosophical influences and pop art iconography.
