Yuko Mohri's 'Entanglements' transforms Milan's Pirelli Hangar Bicocca into a kinetic orchestra
Yuko Mohri's exhibition 'Entanglements' at Pirelli Hangar Bicocca in Milan presents seven kinetic sculptures functioning as a collective orchestra. The Japanese artist's installation creates waves of sound and movement through an ensemble of disparate objects including spinning staircases, electric fans, an aquarium, a glockenspiel, and an automated piano. Works like 'I/O' (2011–) use dangling paper rolls that gather dust, with scanned data triggering lightbulbs and feather dusters. 'Flutter' (2018–25) employs fish movement in an aquarium to activate an organ, referencing John Cage and Nam June Paik. 'Piano Solo: Belle-Île' (2024) features video of Monet's painting location triggering a self-playing piano. The exhibition emphasizes the constellation of works over individual pieces, with systems that remain partially mysterious. Mohri previously presented related work in the Japanese Pavilion at the 2024 Venice Biennale. The show runs through January 11, 2025.
