Yuhan Wang's Cinema of Restraint: Repetition, Duration, and Systemic Pressure

Los Angeles-based filmmaker Yuhan Wang builds tension through repetition, duration, and spatial control across three films: Anesthesia, Never Full, and Olm's House. Her work avoids emotional release, instead making pressure visible through form. Anesthesia centers on a mother and daughter in a small Chinese city, using documentary footage of female labor and animal farming to interrupt the domestic narrative; the mother's role as an anaesthetist shapes the film's logic of delayed pain. Never Full takes female bulimia as a starting point but refuses diagnosis or recovery, building meaning through repeated gestures and interrupted actions; it was a finalist in the Beijing International Film Festival's Dance Film Section and screened at REDCAT in Los Angeles. Olm's House constructs a closed world of looping actions and spatial control, selected for the 55th Sehsüchte International Student Film Festival in Germany. Wang's films have been recognized at the Beijing International Film Festival, Flickers' Rhode Island International Film Festival, REDCAT, Sehsüchte, and Otherwise Film Festival. Her practice moves between experimental and narrative cinema, treating the body as a site where form happens rather than a symbol to be decoded.
