Yuchu Zhao Reconstructs Language and Memory at CAM Naples and aolab Shanghai

exhibition · 2026-04-26

Chinese artist Yuchu Zhao presented solo exhibitions at CAM – Casoria Contemporary Art Museum in Naples (October 17–24, 2025) and aolab Gallery in Shanghai (August 15–September 5, 2025), both titled "Forms of the Unspoken and more." Zhao's practice spans painting, printmaking, and installation, all rooted in a method that begins with recorded conversations in Mandarin and English, edited down to single words. These words are then physically reconstructed, stripped of syntax and context, forcing viewers to focus on tone, spacing, and hesitation rather than meaning. In the light installation "The Terminator" (2024–2025), isolated terms like "melodramatic," "idealism," "motivation," and "action" glow as objects, no longer accusing or persuading but carrying traces of past emotional situations. The series "The Pensieve" (2023–2024) uses overlapping transparent acrylic panels with partial images and signs, where memory appears not as intact retrieval but as an archive continuously reformed through layers of obstruction. Zhao resists confession; instead, she focuses on how experiences are shaped when translated into form. Words become objects, memories become constructions, and meaning is negotiated moment by moment by each viewer.
