YouTube to Automatically Label AI-Generated Videos

On Wednesday, YouTube revealed it will begin automatically labeling videos that feature AI-generated or AI-modified content, shifting from its earlier practice of relying on creators to disclose this information. The platform's internal mechanisms will identify "significant photorealistic AI" and apply the appropriate labels. These labels will be prominently displayed beneath the video player for long-form content and on YouTube Shorts. This change comes in the wake of Google's introduction of Gemini Omni at its Google I/O developer conference, a multimodal AI model designed to create high-quality videos. Starting in May, YouTube will implement new internal signals for detecting AI content. While creators can correct misidentified videos, they cannot remove labels for content produced using YouTube's AI tools like Veo or Dream Screen. Videos with C2PA metadata indicating full AI generation will have labels permanently attached. OpenAI has recently aligned with the C2PA standard, joining Nvidia, Kakao, and Eleven Labs. The automatic detection enhances YouTube's AI deepfake detection, allowing any adult to search for face matches. Importantly, AI labels will not influence video recommendations or monetization. Additionally, YouTube has invested in AI functionalities such as Ask YouTube, a playlist creator for YouTube Music, and AI-generated video summaries.
