YouTube expands AI likeness detection to entertainment industry with agency support
YouTube has extended its AI likeness detection technology to the entertainment industry, including talent agencies, management companies, and celebrities they represent. The company announced this expansion on Tuesday, building on a pilot program launched last year with creators and expanded this spring to politicians, government officials, and journalists. Major agencies like CAA, UTA, WME, and Untitled Management provided feedback on the tool, which scans for AI-generated content to detect visual matches of enrolled participants' faces. Similar to YouTube's Content ID system for copyright protection, the likeness detection feature allows rights owners to request removal of videos for privacy violations or submit copyright takedown requests, though parody and satire content remains permitted. The technology currently focuses on visual likeness but will support audio detection in the future. YouTube has also advocated for federal protections through support of the NO FAKES Act in Washington D.C., which would regulate unauthorized AI recreations of voices and visual likenesses. While the company hasn't disclosed specific removal numbers, it noted in March that the volume of takedowns remains "very small." The tool aims to protect public figures from having their identities used without permission, particularly in scam advertisements, and doesn't require entertainers to have their own YouTube channels to use it.
