Youth Demand activists paste Gaza photo over Picasso's 'Motherhood' at National Gallery London
At London's National Gallery, two Youth Demand activists covered Pablo Picasso's 1901 painting 'Motherhood (La Maternité)' with a photograph of a Gazan mother and child. The image was captured by Palestinian journalist Ali Jadallah, depicting a mother holding an injured child amid bombing debris. Activists Jai Halai, 23, an NHS worker, and Monday-Malachi Rosenfeld, 21, a student, then poured red paint on the gallery floor before their arrest. The museum confirmed no artwork damage occurred. Youth Demand, emerging from Just Stop Oil's student wing, demands a two-way arms embargo on Israel and cessation of new UK oil and gas licenses since 2021. The group's online statement warns of further disruptions in other cities starting next month. This protest follows Just Stop Oil activists throwing soup at Vincent Van Gogh's 'Sunflowers' paintings last month in the same gallery's exhibition of his collected works.
