Young V&A Opens July 1 as London's First National Museum for Children

institutional · 2026-04-27

On July 1, 2023, the Young Victoria & Albert Museum will debut in the previous V&A Museum of Childhood in London. Following a three-year renovation, the museum provides areas for infants, children, and teenagers, along with complimentary exhibitions and events. The galleries, named Play, Imagine, and Design, showcase sensory environments and a game design area. According to Director Tristram Hunt, the museum aims to tackle the effects of the pandemic on youth and the decline of creative pursuits in educational settings. It features 2,000 pieces from the V&A collection, including an interactive Minecraft installation by Blockworks and murals by Mark Malarko. The opening exhibition, This Is Me, includes portraits by Rehan Jamil and self-portraits from artists like Chila Kumari Singh Burman and Quentin Blake.
