Young British Artists Exhibition Opens in Naples
A group exhibition titled 'Young British Artists. Da Londra a Napoli' is on view at Gallerie d'Italia in Naples, curated by Luca Beatrice. The show features works by Gilbert & George, Damien Hirst, Marc Quinn, Matt Collishaw, Tracey Emin, Sarah Lucas, Sam Taylor-Wood, Douglas Gordon, Darren Almond, and Martin Creed. Hirst's 'Problems' critiques the cure-addiction cycle, while his 'Everes comyntas' depicts a butterfly on petals. Hirst recently invested in a new 2,570-square-meter studio in Soho. Collishaw's 'Ophelia' explores suicide through a white milk sculpture. Emin's 'Be Faithful to Your Dreams' combines cursive neon with sentimentality. Lucas's 'I Know What I Like in Your Wardrobe' challenges gender roles. Taylor-Wood's 'Travesty of a Mockery' (1995) uses dual screens to depict marital conflict. Gordon's work engages with Hollywood icons, and Almond's 'Tuesday (1440 minutes)' records his studio minute by minute. The exhibition also references Britpop culture with a DJ set by Giorgio Valletta. Naples was chosen due to local gallerists Massimo and Angela Lauro's interest in YBAs, and the Museo Archeologico hosted Hirst's first retrospective in 2004. The installation faces spatial challenges, with Creed's neon 'Work No. 285' partially obscured.
