Younès Ben Slimane's 'Images de Tunisie' at Zaha Hadid Foundation
The Zaha Hadid Foundation in London presents 'Images de Tunisie', a solo exhibition by Tunisian artist and former architect Younès Ben Slimane, running until 29 June. The show features three films shot over the past six years: 'All Come from Dust' (2019), 'Parallel' (2018), and the newly commissioned 'Images de Tunisie' (2024). The works explore Tunisia's vernacular architecture through kilns, bathhouses, and ruined villages, focusing on the duality of tangible and intangible elements. The title film reappropriates footage from Georges Barrois's 1946 ethnographic documentary and other newsreels from France's National Audiovisual Institute (INA), combining them with contemporary footage of sites like Matmata's troglodyte homes and the Berber villages of Douiret and Tameghza. Curated by Johan Deurell, the exhibition marks Ben Slimane's first UK solo show and inaugurates a new exhibition program at the foundation. Deurell describes the commissioned piece as a commentary on cinematic language and power dynamics, with a subtle, 'post-post-colonial' approach to colonialism.
