YouGov survey on Italian museum attendance reveals skewed data
A YouGov survey promoted by Ansa claims 6% of Italians visit a museum at least once a month, which would translate to over 3.5 million people making about 46 million annual visits. Adding those who visit 4-5 times a year brings the total to 102 million visits. However, official data from the Italian Ministry of Culture reports only 57,730,502 total visitors to state museums, archaeological areas, and monuments in 2023. The survey, based on about 1,000 respondents from YouGov's database, is not designed to estimate actual museum attendance. The more relevant finding is that only 9% of respondents disagreed with the statement that art in Italy is mostly about heritage protection and lacks innovation, suggesting widespread perception of insufficient innovation in the cultural sector.
