Yoshitomo Nara's first major Spanish retrospective opens at Guggenheim Bilbao

exhibition · 2026-04-26

The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao inaugurated on June 28 a major retrospective of Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara, running until November 3. Curated by Lucía Agirre, the exhibition spans 40 years of Nara's career, from his German period to the present. Nara personally oversaw the installation, marking his first large solo show in Spain. The exhibition features his signature child portraits, which serve as alter egos exploring memory, emotion, and social issues like peace and disarmament. Works include 'My Drawing Room 2008,' reconstructing his childhood creative space, and 'Fountain of Life,' a philosophical piece. The 2011 earthquake and Fukushima nuclear disaster prompted Nara to reconnect with his rural roots. Born in Hirosaki, Aomori in 1959, Nara studied at Aichi University of the Arts and Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, lived in Cologne until 2000, and later taught in Tokyo, Paris, and Los Angeles. His style echoes Margaret Keane's big-eyed children and manga, and he is friends with Takashi Murakami. The exhibition is sponsored by Fundación BBVA and will travel to Baden-Baden and London.
