Yorgos Lanthimos' 'Poor Things' is a Feminist Frankenstein Tale

other · 2026-04-27

Yorgos Lanthimos's new film 'Poor Things' (Italian title 'Povere Creature!') is set for release in Italian theaters on January 25. The film, based on Alasdair Gray's 1992 novel, reimagines Mary Shelley's 'Frankenstein' with a feminist twist. Emma Stone stars as Bella Baxter, a Victorian woman resurrected by Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe), who then escapes with lawyer Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo) in pursuit of knowledge and freedom. The screenplay is by Tony McNamara, Lanthimos's collaborator on 'The Favourite'. Co-produced by Lanthimos, Stone, Ed Guiney, and Andrew Lowe, the film blends gothic atmospheres with a coming-of-age journey about female emancipation.
