Yona Friedman's Mobile Architecture Exhibition at MAXXI Rome

exhibition · 2026-05-05

The MAXXI museum in Rome presents 'Yona Friedman. Mobile Architecture, People’s Architecture', a major exhibition originally organized by Power Station of Art in Shanghai in 2015, now re-envisioned for Rome in collaboration with the architect. The show features Friedman's iconic Ville Spatiale, a fragment of which is installed at MAXXI, alongside new graphic works, drawings from the 1960s, mobile structures with assembly instructions, photomontages, videos, and animated films. A temporary Street Museum displays 16 objects collected from citizens via an open call. The exhibition explores Friedman's theory of Mobile Architecture, developed in the late 1950s, emphasizing improvisation and user participation. Highlights include a 9-meter-long model of Ville Spatiale, a mural with a playful dialogue between dots, and reproductions of structures like Griboulli (1980–95) and Rod Net Structure (1970). Also on view are materials from Boulevard Garibaldi, his home and studio, and an abstract of the video interview 'Yona Friedman: an indisciplined inhabitant' (2017) by Sylvie Boulanger. The exhibition is accompanied by a publication with texts by Hou Hanru, Gon Yang, Manuel Orazi, and an interview by Elena Motisi.
