Yoichiro Kawaguchi Retrospective at MEET Digital Culture Center in Milan

exhibition · 2026-04-27

The MEET Digital Culture Center in Milan is hosting 'Zero Gravity Evolution', a retrospective dedicated to Japanese digital art pioneer Yoichiro Kawaguchi. Born in 1952 on Tanegashima island, Kawaguchi began experimenting with CRT graphic displays in 1975, creating his first work 'Pollen'. He is recognized as the first artist to generate computer images solely through algorithms. The exhibition is designed as an evolving organism, with a different installation featured each month in the Immersive Room, starting with 'Xenion' (2003). 'Xenion' presents fluid, liquid-metal-like forms in constant intelligent mutation, simulating artificial life and exploring the conceptual balance between organic nature and generative algorithms. Kawaguchi studied at Kyushu Institute of Design's Visual Design Department and since 1976 has focused on 'self-propagating growth models'—algorithmic systems that computationally reproduce organic growth phenomena, a process he terms morphogenesis. His work exemplifies digital biomorphism, where mathematical natural forms are transfigured into dreamlike, ancestral imagery. Kawaguchi envisions high-definition computer graphics enabling fresh perceptions, such as describing subtropical warm water as a purified object in a realm of overflowing brilliance.
