Yinka Ilori on Color, Community, and Chasing the Sun with Veuve Clicquot

artist · 2026-05-07

British-Nigerian artist and designer Yinka Ilori, known as the 'architect of joy,' discusses his color-drenched upbringing and how it shapes his practice. Born in London in 1987 to Nigerian parents, he grew up surrounded by vibrant textiles that his family used to remember home. His eponymous studio, staffed by 'color-obsessed architects and designers,' creates works that blend vivid hues with culturally inspired patterns. Notable projects include a 2021 transformation of the Canary Wharf public basketball court and the 2023 interactive sculpture 'Beacon of Dreams' at Soho Farmhouse in Oxfordshire. Ilori has collaborated with brands like Lego, New Balance, and most recently Veuve Clicquot, for whom he created the installation and collection 'Chasing the Sun,' unveiled at Milan Design Week 2026. He also delivered a TED Talk on trans-generational joy at TED2026 in Vancouver. His creative process is rooted in travel and reconnecting with his younger self. Upcycling began during his degree at London Metropolitan University under tutor Jane Atfield. His foundation co-creates play spaces with communities worldwide, aiming for two projects per year. Currently, he is working with sound artists on a special project for an upcoming show.
