Yin Xiuzhen's Essential Works: From Dress Box to Portable Cities

This article examines significant pieces by Yin Xiuzhen, a Beijing-born artist (b. 1963) who has been a crucial player in the realm of Chinese contemporary art since the 1990s. Following her graduation from Capital Normal University in 1989, she rose to prominence alongside fellow artists like Yu Hong, Song Yonghong, Wang Jinsong, and her spouse, Song Dong. Her work, influenced by Beijing's urban changes and global trends, incorporates everyday objects such as used clothing, suitcases, and cement to delve into themes of memory, identity, and social commentary. Key works include Dress Box (1995), Washing River (1995), the ongoing Portable Cities series (2001–), Collective Subconscious (2007), and Piercing the Sky (2008–24).
