Yield Strength: Adelaide Biennial 2026 Examines Resilience Under Pressure
The 2026 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art, named Yield Strength, marks Ellie Buttrose's inaugural major curatorial endeavor following her Golden Lion win for National Participation at the 2024 Venice Biennale alongside Archie Moore. This exhibition showcases the works of 24 Australian artists across three locations: the Art Gallery of South Australia, Samstag Museum of Art, and Adelaide Botanic Garden, and will be open until 8 June. The title draws inspiration from an engineering concept that indicates the threshold at which materials yield under stress. Featured artworks include Erika Scott's Necrorealist Sunscreen (2026), a 15-metre fused assemblage of discarded items; and Nathan Beard's Ciceroni and Cicerone (both 2025), which depict silicone arms holding 3D-printed Buddha heads, among others. The exhibition delves into the micro-tensions that influence resilience in the face of societal and political challenges.
