Yayoi Kusama unveils monumental public sculpture at London's Liverpool Street station
On August 7, 2024, Yayoi Kusama inaugurated 'Infinite Accumulation', a permanent public art installation at Liverpool Street station in London. The work, commissioned by the Crossrail Art Foundation, consists of stainless steel spheres suspended from a steel wire, forming a serpentine canopy over the station entrance. The spheres, which reflect their surroundings, cover an area of about 100 meters and reach 10 meters in height. This is Kusama's first permanent public artwork in the UK and the largest she has ever created. The artist describes the spheres as symbolizing individual personalities and the connecting wire as representing the underlying social structure. The installation is part of the Elizabeth Line's public art program, which includes works by Spencer Finch, Darren Almond, Douglas Gordon, Richard Wright, Simon Periton, Conrad Shawcross, Chantal Joffe, and Michal Rovner. Additionally, Kusama's bronze sculpture 'Pumpkin' (6 m high, 5.5 m wide) is on temporary display at the Serpentine Galleries' Round Pond in Kensington Gardens until November 3, 2024. The Elizabeth Line, which opened in 2022 after delays and a cost of £19 billion, connects Heathrow and Reading to Abbey Wood and Shenfield via 100 km of track and ten new stations.
