Yayoi Kusama's Narcissus Garden Installed at Philip Johnson's Glass House

exhibition · 2026-05-05

Yayoi Kusama's monumental installation 'Narcissus Garden' has been installed at the Glass House in New Canaan, Connecticut, marking the tenth anniversary of the site's public opening and the 110th birthday of its architect, Philip Johnson. The work consists of 1,300 stainless steel spheres floating in the pond of the Glass House's garden, originally created for the 1966 Venice Biennale. The installation evokes the myth of Narcissus and Kusama's obsession with circular forms. It is the latest in a series of site-specific interventions at the Glass House. Curator Iren Shum stated that Johnson admired and collected Kusama's work. In addition to 'Narcissus Garden,' on view until November 30, the Glass House will also display Kusama's giant steel pumpkin sculpture 'Pumpkin' (2015) and host a special edition of 'Infinity Room' with polka dots on the glass walls from September 1 to 26.
