Yayoi Kusama Retrospective at Guggenheim Bilbao Spans Eight Decades

exhibition · 2026-04-27

The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao presents 'Yayoi Kusama. 1945 – Now', a comprehensive retrospective covering nearly eighty years of the artist's career. Curated by Doryun Chong and Mika Yoshitake with Lucía Agirre, the exhibition features almost two hundred works, some never before exhibited. It follows a thematic rather than chronological structure, highlighting recurring concepts like infinity, accumulation, and self-obliteration. The show includes early drawings from age sixteen, recent works from June 2023, and an Infinity Mirror Room. Kusama, born in Matsumoto in 1929, moved to the US in 1957, where she developed her Infinity Net series. The exhibition also addresses her voluntary residence in a Japanese psychiatric hospital since 1977. Previously presented at M+ in Hong Kong, Bilbao is the final stop. Runs until October 10, 2023.
