Yayoi Kusama Children's Book 'From Here to Infinity' Published by MoMA
The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) has published 'Yayoi Kusama: From Here to Infinity', a 26-page children's book aimed at ages 4 to 8. Written by Sarah Suzuki, curator of MoMA's Department of Drawings and Prints, and illustrated by Ellen Weinstein, the book was created in collaboration with Kusama's studio. It traces the artist's life from her childhood in Matsumoto, Japan, where she defied her mother's traditional expectations to pursue art, through her move to New York and her transformative visit to MoMA, to her return to Japan and her iconic 'infinity rooms'. The narrative deliberately omits Kusama's voluntary residence in a psychiatric hospital since 1977, presenting her story as a superhero's adventure. The book goes on sale September 26 at the MoMA bookstore and select retailers, exactly one month after the release of 'The world is not a rectangle', a children's book about Zaha Hadid by Jeanette Winter. Kusama also recently illustrated a new edition of 'The Little Mermaid' with the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Copenhagen, which hosted a major retrospective in 2015. Her own museum in Tokyo, featuring exhibition spaces, an archive, and a library, opens October 1.
