Yatofu Creatives transforms Beijing coal plant into Aitashop flagship store
Yatofu Creatives has converted a 1954 coal power plant in Beijing's 751 D·Park into The Future Ruin, the flagship store for bicycle brand Aitashop. The project preserves the site's industrial archaeology—including ten monumental desulfurization tanks—while introducing retail, repair, and community spaces. Architects Yihan Xiang and Angela Lindahl retained the oxidised exteriors of the tanks, turning them into sculptural presences around which the Experience Hub is built. Inside, the tanks house fitting rooms and services made from cycling materials like stainless steel and perforated metal, balanced with wood, terracotta, and textiles. At the west entrance, a semi-open triangular volume called The Garage hosts visible bike repairs, washing, and maintenance, transforming the workshop into a daily stage. A modular metal grid creates a lightweight display structure that continues the site's industrial heritage, while light pine furnishings add a domestic touch. The store also includes a café where locals gather. Xiang describes the project as a 'contemporary ruin' that fosters a future-oriented cycling community.
