Yasuyoshi Chiba wins World Press Photo 2020 with protest poetry image

The winners of the 63rd World Press Photo contest were revealed on social media, bypassing the traditional ceremony in Amsterdam due to Covid-19. Yasuyoshi Chiba earned the title of Photo of the Year for his work 'Straight Voice,' which captures a young man delivering a protest poem in Khartoum, Sudan, on June 19, 2019. Lekgetho Makola, the jury chair, commended the photograph for its themes of hope and gratitude. Romain Laurendeau was awarded Story of the Year for 'Kho, the Genesis of a Revolt,' which focused on protests by Algerian youth. Other category winners included Nikita Teryoshin (Contemporary Issues, singles), Lorenzo Tugnoli (Contemporary Issues, stories), and Esther Horvath (Environment, singles), among others.
