Yangtze Mural Transforms Doyers Street in NYC's Chinatown

cultural-heritage · 2026-05-28

A vibrant street mural titled Yangtze has been painted on the historic pedestrian lane of Doyers Street in New York's Chinatown. Created by design studio SMOE with collaborators Mike Makatron and Max Frieder, the work was supported by Artolution and over thirty volunteers including Boy Scouts and passersby. Inspired by the Yangtze River—China's longest waterway and a symbol of connection—the mural covers the entire two-hundred-foot street, revealing mythological figures, natural elements, and an intense color palette best viewed from above. The project was realized in partnership with Explore Chinatown and technical support from Mapei USA, with documentation by Just a Spectator. The mural adds a contemporary chapter to Doyers Street's layered history of immigration and community change.
