Yana Peel Resigns from Serpentine and Para Site Amid Controversy

institutional · 2026-04-20

Yana Peel resigned as CEO of London's Serpentine Galleries on 18 June 2019, citing 'toxic personal attacks' as her reason for departure. Her resignation statement, published that day, prompted the postponement of a press view for Junya Ishigami's new Serpentine Pavilion. Peel warned in London's Evening Standard that continued campaigns could erode private support for the art community. Ten days later, on 28 June, ArtAsiaPacific reported she also stepped down from her board member role at Hong Kong gallery Para Site. She maintains positions on the 'partners & friends' list for Spring Workshop and the advisory board for Asia Art Archive. A legal complaint led The Guardian to remove a 14 June 2019 article and apologize to Peel in February 2020. ArtReview clarified that Peel has no involvement in Novalpina Capital, an investment fund managed by her husband Stephen Peel and others. She holds only a small, indirect, passive interest in the fund and owns no stake in NSO Group or Novalpina Capital entities.
