Yamamoto Masao's Solo Exhibition Explores Japanese Concept of Ma at Galeria Marcelo Guarnieri

From August 1 to September 19, 2026, Galeria Marcelo Guarnieri in São Paulo will host a solo exhibition by Japanese photographer Yamamoto Masao. The exhibition delves into the idea of Ma (間), which highlights significant pauses and the notion of emptiness. Designed by architect Sakae Ishii, the space features stone benches and pink granite slabs. It showcases a collection of photographs, photobooks, and poem-boxes spanning over thirty years, including works such as A Box of Ku, Nakazora, Kawa=Flow, Shizuka=Cleanse, and Bonsai – Microcosms Macrocosms. Shizuka = Cleanse (2012) examines elements of small forests, while Bonsai captures Minoru Akiyama's bonsai. Additionally, accordion books and poem-boxes from the Ryokan series illustrate the interplay between text and imagery, with Ma serving as a central theme in Yamamoto's exploration of aging and impermanence.
