Yale student sues university over AI cheating accusation

Thierry Rignol, a participant in Yale's Executive MBA program, has initiated a federal lawsuit against the institution following allegations of employing generative AI during a final examination. Having invested $208,500 in tuition, Rignol was suspended for a year and received an F in the course Sourcing and Managing Funds, despite asserting he was among the top students, poised to graduate at the top of his class. The claims arose from an AI detection software, GPTZero, which identified portions of his exam as potentially AI-generated. Rignol contends that GPTZero exhibits bias against non-native English speakers, misinterpreting his formal writing style as AI-produced. He further claims that Yale's disciplinary proceedings aimed to silence his conservative viewpoints, as he promoted smaller government and questioned DEI initiatives. Filed in February 2025, the lawsuit has grown to 125 docket entries and a third amended complaint, with no trial date established. Rignol asserts he was denied the title of class valedictorian, an accolade he believes he rightfully earned according to Yale's standards. This case underscores the difficulties universities encounter in regulating AI usage, given the unreliability of detection tools, a concern even acknowledged by Yale.
