Yahon Chang's Performance and Painting Exhibition at Platform-L
Platform-L Contemporary Art Center in Seoul is presenting 'The Night Migrations,' an exhibition of paintings by Taiwanese artist Yahon Chang (b. 1948), curated by Manu Park. The show features 38 artworks from Chang's 'Shadow of Buddha' (1996–2005) and 'Blossoms Flourishing' (1999–2005) series. The opening night included a performance by Chang at the Live Arts Hall, a basement venue designed for interdisciplinary performances with exceptional acoustics and lighting. The performance was inspired by six poems, including works by American poet Louise Glück, recited in Korean and English. Chang's painting practice draws on Daoist and Zen Buddhist traditions, combining calligraphy and Chinese martial arts. He uses a brush as long as he is tall, standing on linen or xuan paper, and his movements evoke a sense of transcendence. The 'Blossoms Flourishing' series employs bright pink, his late wife May Der's favorite color, using gouache, ink, and acrylic. The exhibition runs through October 15. A new monograph, 'Yahon Chang: Painting as Performance,' published by Hatje Cantz Verlag, is available.
