Yael Bartana's 'Things to Come' exhibition at Gammel Strand explores historical memory and nationhood

The exhibition 'Things to Come' by Yael Bartana is on display at Gammel Strand in Copenhagen from 2 February to 20 May 2023. It showcases works spanning from 2008 to 2023, beginning with 'Zukunftsbewältigung (Overcoming the Future)' (2023), a seven-minute video featuring masked individuals dancing under the night sky. Bartana, an artist originally from Israel and currently residing in Berlin and Amsterdam, delves into themes of historical memory. Notable pieces include 'The Missing Negatives of the Sonnenfeld Collection' (2008), which reinterprets Herbert Sonnenfeld's images of Jewish immigrants, and 'Stalag' (2014/15), where Bartana portrays an SS officer. Other works include 'Herzl' (2015), 'Two Minutes to Midnight' (2021), and 'Malka Germania' (2021), all of which challenge prevailing identity narratives.
