artist · 2026-04-19

At 48 years old, Xu Zhen, an artist based in Shanghai, has moved his studios to Fuxing Island, located along the Huangpu River in northwest Shanghai. This area, which was a shipyard in the 1930s, is now drawing artists from Songjiang. Xu established MadeIn Company in 2009 and launched MadeIn Gallery in 2014, shortly after introducing his trademark, XU ZHEN®. A prominent figure in Chinese contemporary art since the 1990s, Xu is known for various works, including the 2007 sculpture Dinosaurs, which comments on the monotony of art. Additionally, Fuxing Island holds historical importance as the site where Chiang Kai-shek departed for Taiwan in 1949 and was linked to the "Gang of Four."
