Xavier Zimmermann's Photographic Inquiry into Screen and Architecture at Frac Alsace

exhibition · 2026-04-23

Xavier Zimmermann's solo exhibition at Frac Alsace (January 2–March 10, 2002) presents his decade-long photographic exploration of the concept of the screen as it mediates between photography and architecture. Zimmermann's work spans nocturnal facades of suburban houses, panoptic views of contemporary architecture, church interiors, crowds, snowy Quebec landscapes, and a recent series of Syrian images structured by highly colored fabrics. He investigates how architectural spaces—understood broadly as natural and artificial constructions—organize social, political, and cultural structures through mechanisms of transparency, opacity, envelope, and separation. His approach is aesthetic rather than sociological, continuing the tradition of objective photography. The artist aims to reveal how architecture enables populations to coexist without seeing each other, emphasizing interior/exterior, visible/hidden, present/absent dynamics. The exhibition is the first part of a larger project that will continue next year at Le Creux de l'Enfer in Thiers and at Frac Auvergne.
