Xavier Veilhan to Represent France at 2017 Venice Biennale
France has selected Xavier Veilhan to represent the nation at the 2017 Venice Biennale, following Anri Sala (2013) and Céleste Boursier-Mougenot (2015). The exhibition, titled "Musical Merzbau," will be curated by Christian Marclay (Golden Lion winner in 2011 for The Clock) and Lionel Bovier, director of Mamco in Geneva. Veilhan, born in 1963, is represented by Galerie Perrotin (Paris), Andréhn-Schiptjenko (Stockholm), 313 Art Project (Seoul), and Nara Roesler (São Paulo). The project envisions an immersive sound environment occupying the entire pavilion, altering spatial perception. It draws from Veilhan's earlier works (The Studio, 1993; The Forest and The Cave, 1998) and references Kurt Schwitters' Merzbau, as well as Bauhaus and Black Mountain College experiments. Production is managed by Arter, a contemporary art space promoted by the Vehbi Koç Foundation (Istanbul), in collaboration with We Love Art.
