Xavier Marabout remixes Tintin into Hopper's iconic paintings
French painter Xavier Marabout has created a series of mashups inserting characters from Hergé's Tintin comics into Edward Hopper's most famous works, including Nighthawks, Gas Station, and Office at Night. Produced between 2014 and 2017, these paintings transpose the young reporter and his companions—Milù, the Dupondt twins, Bianca Castafiore, and pin-up girls—into Hopper's intimate, silent domestic and urban scenes. Marabout's citational style, which also references Pablo Picasso, has sparked controversy for its heavy appropriation. The series remains contested today, despite being created several years ago. Marabout, a graduate of Brera Academy of Fine Arts and the University of Bologna, cites comics culture as a major influence.
