Xadalu's Solo Show at Iberê Camargo Foundation Confronts Indigenous Erasure in Porto Alegre

exhibition · 2026-04-23

Xadalu Tupã Jekupé, a Guarani Mbyá mestizo artist, opens the solo exhibition "Antes que se apague: territórios flutuantes" at the Fundação Iberê Camargo in Porto Alegre on May 14, 2022. The show, featuring 19 works including 14 new pieces, symbolically reclaims territory and addresses the silencing of Indigenous presence in western Rio Grande do Sul. It draws from childhood memories of the artist, his mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother in the former Ararenguá Indigenous Land by the Ibirapuitã River in Alegrete. The curator notes the work offers a perspective from those who lost battles, including the Guarani War and daily struggles, making other ways of life visible. Developed with Guarani community participation, the exhibition process included a visit by the artist and curator to a Guarani village in Porto Alegre for conversations around a fire. The exhibition runs until July 31, 2022, with visits from Thursday to Sunday, 2 PM to 6 PM, at Av. Padre Cacique, 2000, Bairro Cristal.
