X Contemporary's 'Ritratto di Famiglia' Opens in Milan's Periphery
In Milan's Chiesa Rossa district, the cultural association X Contemporary inaugurated its first exhibition, 'Ritratto di Famiglia,' on December 13, 2018. Founded by Roberta Riccio and Carmine Agosto, the space was awarded through the municipal call 'Spazio alle Periferie' in 2017. The association occupies two venues on Via Santa Teresa: one colorful and open for research and meetings, the other a white cube. Both face the street and a courtyard of public housing, fostering direct dialogue with the neighborhood. Although the project originated at NABA (Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti), its focus is on community and social value, listening, and preserving oral histories. The exhibition features works by Elena Perugi, Clarissa Falco, Carmine Agosto, Benedetta Incerti, Manuela Piccolo, Atelier Colla (ENECE Film), and Adriana Tomatis, alongside everyday objects donated by neighbors. Diego Morgera's historical research frames the show, highlighting how migration since 2000 has brought new families from North Africa, India, South America, and Southeast Asia, intertwining with older working-class stories that remain largely oral and at risk of being lost.
