WXY's Urban Forest Plan Aims to Expand NYC Canopy to 30% by 2040

WXY's urban forest plan for New York City, released by the Mayor's Office of Climate and Environmental Justice, targets increasing canopy coverage from 23% to 30% by 2040. The plan outlines 43 actions across three pathways: preserving existing trees, planting new ones, and cultivating stewards through engagement and education. It was informed by over 8,000 New Yorkers and 23 city agencies, with key roles played by Mayor Zohran Mamdani, Chief Climate Officer Louise Yeung, and Parks Commissioner Tricia Shimamura. WXY principal Claire Weisz emphasized that no single agency can build the canopy alone, while Adam Lubinsky noted trees appreciate in value over time. At current growth rates, 30% coverage would not be reached until 2055 or later, necessitating accelerated efforts. Other cities with similar plans include Boston (Stoss Landscape Urbanism), Cambridge, Massachusetts (Reed Hilderbrand), Philadelphia (Hinge Collective), and San Francisco.
