Writing as Art: BPER Collection Meets Contemporary Works in Modena

In Modena, the exhibition 'Il tempo della scrittura' at La Galleria di BPER explores writing as a means of transmitting knowledge, juxtaposing ancient paintings from the BPER collection with contemporary works by Sabrina Mezzaqui and Pietro Ruffo, alongside loans from the Galleria Borghese and the Gallerie Nazionali di Arte Antica in Rome. Curated by Stefania de Vincentis from an idea by Francesca Cappelletti, the show addresses themes of education, creative processes, allegories of knowledge, and portraiture as a carrier of ethical and political values. A highlight is Mezzaqui's 'Lettere' (2010), acquired through the BPER Prize 2025, featuring cellulose letters on a woven warp that quotes correspondence between Martin Heidegger and Hannah Arendt. Roman loans include a 17th-century marble bust of Minerva from the Galleria Borghese and 'Amore minacciato da Minerva' attributed to Giulio Romano from Palazzo Barberini, as well as a 'San Girolamo' by Guercino from the Gallerie Nazionali di Arte Antica.
