WriteFlow AI Tool Supports Reflective Academic Writing Through Goal-Oriented Dialogue

WriteFlow, an AI voice-based writing assistant, was developed to enhance reflective academic writing through goal-oriented interaction. A formative study involving 17 participants revealed that writers frequently encounter difficulties in articulating and managing evolving goals during the writing process. Unlike conventional AI writing tools that prioritize efficiency, WriteFlow creates a dialogic space for continuous goal articulation, monitoring, and negotiation based on writers' intentions. A Wizard-of-Oz study with 12 expert users demonstrated that the tool effectively scaffolds metacognitive regulation and reflection-in-action. It supports iterative goal refinement, ensures alignment between goals and text during drafting, and prompts evaluation of goal fulfillment.
